Tom Keane Talks about Resources for Innovation

Tom Keane is an IT Support Specialist at Microsoft Azure and has been with the company for nearly two years. He has served as a leader of various IT initiatives and is currently taking on the challenges of assisting with 2016’s big data. Tom believes there are three keys to success: great mentors, commitment to hard work, and understanding what drives your passion.

In this interview, he shares his thoughts on how graduate students should prepare themselves for an outstanding tech career to maximize their chances of success as they enter this field.

Tom Keane´s achievements:

He is a Microsoft team member who has led several projects, including co-leading Azure Infrastructure Team (AIT), a branch of the IT Support organization. He has been with the company for nearly two years, and he’s taking on his first leadership role at Microsoft. Besides leading AIT, Tom Keane also leads the Azure Architecture Council (Azure AC), which includes several top IT organizations, including Microsoft Azure Storage/Infrastructure and Security.

He advocates on behalf of these organizations in addition to helping to drive vision and strategy for all of the Azure-related initiatives. He works with both internal and external customers as one of Microsoft’s most valuable resources for innovation within Microsoft’s global IT infrastructure technology stack. Software developer and engineer Tom Keane was born in Michigan and lived there until he was 31.

While at GVSU, Tom also started two college radio stations, played bass guitar in a band called “The New Groove,” and co-founded the Grand Rapids Software Community (GRSC). During his time with GRSC, he led a team to develop “Campus Tools,” which grew into the now widely adopted Drupal open-source content management system. This was Tom Keane´s first experience with open-source software and later inspired his vision around cloud computing.
