Aida Morales is the President and CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), a public benefit corporation established by New York State in 1984 to manage and develop Roosevelt Island. Since taking office in 2013, Aida Morales has advocated for the Roosevelt Island community, working to create more affordable housing, expand educational opportunities, and promote economic development.
Roosevelt Island is a small island in the East River of New York City, located just south of Manhattan. It is home to a diverse and vibrant community of residents who enjoy the island’s unique atmosphere and easy access to Manhattan. The island is well-known for its many residential buildings, connected by walkways, bike paths, and tramways.
The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation is responsible for providing public services, such as transportation, sanitation, and recreation, promoting economic development, and overseeing the construction of new buildings and infrastructure.
Morales’s commitment to the Roosevelt Island community is evident in the RIOC’s initiatives and her dedication to her work. This is exemplified by the recent completion of the restoration of the historic Lighthouse Tower on Roosevelt Island, which was opened to the public on May 5, 2022.
The exterior and interior restoration of the tower included masonry restoration, concrete bracket and platform repair, railing restoration, replacement of spiral staircase, door and window restoration, and electrical and site work. These repairs remedied the many life and safety issues addressed for long-term use and will decrease the operation and maintenance costs associated with the tower. Additionally, the new design features a colored up-lighting on the tower, creating a transformative symbol for all of New York to identify as Roosevelt Island.
Morales has also overseen the renovation of the Blackwell House, now a public museum, and the opening of a rapid coronavirus testing center to provide the local community with access to testing. These initiatives have improved the quality of life on Roosevelt Island and ensured the safety of its residents.
