Long before he led Gulf Coast Western, Matthew Fleeger built a resume that spanned multiple industries far removed from oil and gas. Fleeger graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in business, concentrating on finance and marketing, then spent seven years working for Texas-based companies, including one owned by his father.
From Medical Waste to Energy
That early experience gave Fleeger the tools to launch his own venture in 1993 MedSolutions Inc., a company focused on treating and transporting medical waste for healthcare facilities. Under his direction, MedSolutions expanded quickly enough that Fleeger negotiated its sale to Stericycle for roughly $59 million in 2007, a deal that established his reputation as a capable dealmaker.
Following that sale, Fleeger returned to his father’s company and stepped into the role of president and chief executive officer. His background in acquisitions, partnerships and corporate structuring translated directly into his new position, where he has overseen mergers and steady growth at Gulf Coast Western.
A Broader Business Portfolio
Fleeger’s business interests have never been limited to a single sector. He also played a founding role in Palm Beach Tan and Mystic Tan, two companies that grew into some of the largest indoor and spray tanning operators in the country.
That range of experience, from medical waste management to tanning salons to energy extraction, has shaped how Fleeger runs Gulf Coast Western today. Associates describe his leadership style as hands-on, with a consistent focus on transparency and long-term partnerships rather than short-term gains. It is a pattern that traces back through every venture he has built, and one that continues to define the company’s direction under his watch.
Few executives in the energy sector can point to such a varied background before taking the helm of a family business. Fleeger’s early years working for other Texas companies gave him a firsthand look at how different industries handle growth, staffing and customer relationships, lessons he later applied when building MedSolutions from the ground up. That willingness to move between unrelated fields, healthcare logistics, personal care services and now energy extraction, has given Gulf Coast Western a leader whose instincts were sharpened outside the oil patch rather than inside it. Colleagues note that this outsider’s perspective often shows up in how the company negotiates partnerships and structures joint ventures, favoring long-term stability over quick wins.
