Will The Sixth Mass Extinction Destroy Us? The Colcom Foundation Hopes Not

The Colcom Foundation was founded by Cordelia S. May. May, from a young girl, understood how delicate the balance of nature was. Because of the importance of the balance, she became an advocate for family planning.

May understood the growing population would eventually become an unbearable burden on our ecosystem. The idea of maintaining an ecological balance became her lifelong work. In 1996, she launched the Colcom Foundation.

Today, the Colcom Foundation supports efforts to curb the problem of overpopulation, which is leading to the sixth mass extinction. The foundation explains some species extinction is the way of nature and is normal. However, mass extinction is not. During a mass extinction, species become extinct before their time. There have been other mass extinctions in history, but this is not the same. Cataclysmic events were the cause of the past mass extinctions; however, this mass extinction is the fault of humans.

To help restore a sense of balance, Colcom supports many efforts in hopes of making an impact. Locally, the foundation supports conservation, educational, and health and services initiatives.

Nationally, the foundation is a supporter of the Population Media Center. The center uses entertainment as a way to prevent unplanned and unwanted pregnancies with the idea of reducing the national birth rate. They also are supporters of immigration reform. Organizations such as NumbersUSA, Federation for American Immigration Reform are working to create a sustainable immigration policy. If the U.S. reduces the rate of immigrants coming to the country, the need for resources will shrink. The country’s footprint will become smaller.

At the end of the day, it is up to all humans to do their part, according to Colcom. Technology will not provide the answers. According to the foundation, technology is part of the problem. Refer to this page for related information.
