In the competitive world of finance, Justin Nelson has emerged as a pivotal figure, particularly for students aiming to enter the
industry through JP Morgan. Nelson’s journey began at Tufts University, where
he graduated in 1998 with a degree in chemistry and economics. His early career
was marked by a summer internship at JP Morgan, a stepping stone that led to a
full-time role in asset management.
Over the years, Nelson has climbed the ranks to become a managing director at JP Morgan. He
never forgot the challenges he faced as a student seeking internships.
Determined to make a difference, Nelson took it upon himself to bridge the gap
between Tufts University and JP Morgan. His initiative started in 2006 when he
began advocating for Tufts to be recognized as a core school by JP Morgan’s asset management division.
Initially, Justin Nelson’s efforts were solitary. He traveled to campus, collected résumés, and conducted
interviews—all without financial backing from JP Morgan. Yet, his determination
paid off. By 2009, Tufts had achieved core school status, thanks to Nelson’s
persistent efforts. This designation meant that JP Morgan Private
Bank would actively recruit interns and employees from Tufts, providing students with opportunities
Nelson himself had struggled to find.
One notable success story is that of Jon Trott, a Tufts alumnus who secured a summer internship at
JP Morgan in 2009, amid the financial crisis. Trott’s experience echoes the
sentiment of many students who have benefitted from Nelson’s initiatives: without
Nelson’s help, their paths might have been very different.
Today, a strong network of Tufts alumni at JP Morgan supports Justin Nelson in his mission. They serve on recruiting committees,
visit the campus, and mentor students. Through these collective efforts, Nelson
has not only opened doors for many but has also strengthened the relationship
between JP Morgan and Tufts University.
Justin Nelson’s ongoing commitment to fostering opportunities at JP Morgan exemplifies the
impact one individual can have on connecting academia and industry, benefiting
both his alma mater and his professional community.
