Alliance Defending Freedom represents Dan and Jennifer Mead in a lawsuit against the Michigan School District. The couple’s daughter was attending Rockford Middle School. In October 2022, they decided to take their daughter out of the school after they found out that the teachers and staff were treating her as a boy. They were calling her by a different name and using pronouns that did not correspond with her gender.
Dan and Jennifer Mead were not aware that any of this was happening until an employee forgot to change the report. Kate Anderson is a senior counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom. She is also the director of the organization’s Center for Parental Rights. She stated that the school has no right to hide important information from parents. She also stated that the school had the employees intentionally alter information about the couple’s daughter.
Additionally, Kate stated that the school violated Dan and Jennifer’s parental rights by withholding important information about their daughter. The couple’s daughter was 11 years-old when she started middle school in August 2020. The girl started to fall behind in her studies, but Jennifer Mead regularly stayed in touch with the teachers. The girl also met with counselors regularly.
Dan and Jennifer’s daughter sent an email to her teachers asking that she be called by a masculine name. The school started using this masculine name without the girl’s parents knowing. The school counselor did not let the couple know about this either.
The couple thought that the name was a mistake at first, but they eventually found out the truth. Attorneys for the Alliance Defending Freedom stated that the teachers, counselors and other school employees violated the rights of the couple’s parents. That is why they decided to take their daughter out of the school. The lawsuit was filed in the Southern Division of the District Court for the Western District of Michigan.
