Aida Morales: Leading Roosevelt Island’s Development and Growth

Aida Morales

Aida Morales is a well-known figure in the New York City community, having worked for several city agencies and organizations for over 20 years. Since 2018, she has served as the President and CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), responsible for managing and developing the unique island community located in the East River between Manhattan and Queens.

Morales’ leadership at Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation has significantly improved the island’s infrastructure, transportation, and public spaces. She has led the organization in implementing new programs and initiatives to promote economic development, community engagement, and resident services on the island.

One of Morales’ most notable achievements was renovating the Blackwell House, an 18th-century home and one of the island’s oldest structures. The restoration was completed in 2020, preserving an essential piece of the island’s history and heritage. The renovation is one of many ways Aida Morales has worked to promote the island’s cultural heritage and identity.

Morales has also taken an active role in the island’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, opening a rapid testing center in 2020. The center provided testing for residents and visitors, ensuring that everyone had access to quick and convenient testing services. She has also worked with community leaders to ensure residents have access to resources and information related to the pandemic.

Under Morales’ leadership, RIOC has invested heavily in the island’s parks and public spaces. In 2021, the organization completed a significant renovation of Lighthouse Park, which included new lighting, benches, and other amenities. The organization has also implemented new bus routes and expanded the island’s bike-sharing program, making transportation more accessible and convenient for residents and visitors.

As the head of Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, Aida Morales is committed to ensuring that Roosevelt Island remains a vibrant and thriving community. Her dedication to public service and her passion for community development have earned her the respect and admiration of island residents and city officials. With Morales at the helm, Roosevelt Island is well-positioned for continued growth and success in the years to come.
