How the Colcom Foundation is Saving the Planet

Founded in 1996 by Cordelia S. May, a woman who respected both the balance and beauty of nature, the Colcom Foundation is dedicated to preserving both the planet and human civilization as we know it. While the planet will survive in the long run, the same can’t be said for the human race if we keep going down our current path. Cordelia S. May realized this and dedicated her life to making positive changes that will lead to a brighter future.

Stopping Environmental Destruction

One of the biggest problems facing humanity today is environmental destruction. Things like topsoil loss, drinking water scarcity, ocean acidification, and the loss of biodiversity are just as troublesome as climate change, if not more so. The ecosystem is very delicate and humans have pushed it to its breaking point.

The Colcom Foundation is working with other organizations to preserve natural areas in southwestern Pennsylvania in order to protect them from urbanization. This will provide more green areas for people as well as protect the habitats of many animal species.

The Foundation understands the importance of protecting and connecting greenspace in southwestern Pennsylvania. To this end, they support projects such as Hollow Oak Land Trust, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s Revolving Fund, WeConservePA and Westmoreland Land Trust.

Curbing Overpopulation

The problem with overpopulation is two-fold. On one hand, the planet has finite resources and cannot support an infinitely growing population. On the other hand, a population that becomes unbalanced with too many older people compared to younger people could also collapse.

To deal with these issues, the Colcom Foundation advocates for family planning, birth control education, and intelligent immigration reform. This will help to cut down on the number of unwanted children in the world and help balance the old and young so that there is no issue with older people having no one to work and care for them.

Fighting For a Better Future

Though she passed in 2005, Cordelia S. May’s legacy lives on. The Colcom Foundation is doing everything it can to help avert ecological disaster and protect the future of the human race. If we all work together, it isn’t too late.
