Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is a Christian legal organization that seeks to protect the right to freedom of religion and speech in law. Alan Sears founded ADF initially as Alliance Defense Fund, and has been working to defend the rights of Christian believers in America and around the world for over 30 years.
It was headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1993 as a way for Christians to aggressively defend themselves against what they considered liberal organizations that had infringed on their rights. ADF means to proclaim the Christian faith as the foundation of law. ADF is creating a high-profile legal culture and will be bringing lawsuits and defending Christians persecuted in many countries worldwide.
Ultimately, Alliance Defending Freedom is working to change laws and stop people from being persecuted, tortured, or beheaded for their faith. The organization also seeks to change laws at both the state and federal levels so that there is a legal environment that guarantees religious liberty — a legal environment based on conscience — not one that requires strict adherence to secular humanism.
Alliance Defending Freedom has three big emphasis areas:
- To protect the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death.
- To protect the freedom of speech and religion.
- To educate citizens, train attorneys, and develop law schools.
- ADF is currently working on over 40 initiatives in all 50 states. For example, ADF’s Center for Life is working on various issues in every state, such as abortion funding, assisted suicide laws, parental rights in refusing medical treatment for their children, etc.
- They also have a new legal department in Washington, D.C., focusing on pro-life issues and the separation of church and state in that nation’s capital. Alliance Defending Freedom is also working to expand its influence by training attorneys to fight on behalf of Christians persecuted worldwide.
