Colcom Foundation Efforts Towards Alleviating Sixth Mass Extinction

The planet has witnessed five mass extinction events, with the last one happening about 65.5 million years ago. Experts believe that Earth is now witnessing the sixth mass extinction. And unlike the previous five, which were caused by natural causes, the sixth one is caused by humans. Thankfully, organizations like the Colcom Foundation are putting in efforts to address the main cause of the Sixth Mass Extinction, which is overpopulation.

How the Colcom Foundation Is Making an Impact

Cordelia S. May, the founder of the Colcom Foundation, once said that human activity is straining Earth’s natural functions to a point where current ecosystems may not be able to support future generations. Truer words have never been said.

Everywhere you turn, headlines mention an imbalance between the natural world and humans. This is why Mrs. May decided to start a foundation that would address overpopulation and help preserve the environment.

The Organization’s Impact

Colcom’s main areas of interest include carrying capacity, the local environment, and the local community. Carrying capacity aims to address the impact of overpopulation on the environment. This is done by creating awareness and teaching people about family planning and immigration. The aim is to educate everyone to make an effort towards shrinking the population to avoid exceeding the planet’s human carrying capacity.

When it comes to the local environment, Colcom Foundation support environmental and conservation projects in various areas in southwestern Pennsylvania. One of the main projects is known as the Hollow Oak Land Trust, which protects green spaces.

The other area of interest is the local community, an initiative that supports projects aimed at improving life quality in southwestern Pennsylvania. Some projects are tailored toward art and culture, and others are tailored toward community and economic development, leisure and recreation, and education, among others.

By funding different projects, Colcom Foundation has and continues to make strides towards a sustainable environment, hoping more people can join them. Visit this page to learn more.
